Lead response time is still the cheapest growth lever

Of all the things a sales team can change, response time is the cheapest and the most reliable. It needs no new headcount, no new positioning and no better product.

What the curve looks like

Contact rates fall steeply in the first hour and then flatten. The difference between five minutes and thirty is large; the difference between four hours and six is almost nothing, because by then the buyer has already spoken to someone else. This is why "we call everyone back the same day" is not the achievement it sounds like.

Why teams are slow

Rarely laziness. Usually the enquiry lands in a shared inbox nobody owns, or the form notification goes to marketing, or the rep is in a meeting and the lead sits until evening. These are routing problems, not effort problems, and routing problems have software solutions.

What to automate

Acknowledge instantly — a WhatsApp or email template that confirms receipt and names the person who will call buys you time and stops the buyer contacting a competitor. Assign automatically by territory, product or round-robin, and create a call task with a fifteen-minute deadline. Escalate to a manager if the task is untouched after thirty minutes.

Measure the right number

Not average response time — averages hide the disasters. Track the median and the ninety-fifth percentile. The median tells you how the process performs; the ninety-fifth tells you how often it fails badly, which is what actually costs deals.

Expect a plateau

Once you are consistently under fifteen minutes, further speed gains stop mattering and the next constraint becomes what the rep says on the call. Fix response time first, because it is easy, then move on.
